JKUAT Students Win Mitsubishi Scholarships

Mitsubishi Corporation has awarded scholarships to 25 Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Bachelor of Commerce students from the College of Human Resource Development (COHRED). The number is the highest among past similar scholarships awarded by the Corporation.

The scholarship initiative, which has benefited over 40 JKUAT students in three years, is based on a rigorous screening procedure that identifies students from needy background who demonstrate academic excellence.

The Wednesday, February 14, 2023 event saw the students awarded scholarships certificates.  The gesture is a financial boost that is expected to help the students focus on their studies.

During the awarding ceremony, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Robert Kinyua hailed the initiative, stating that many students had benefited from the scholarships thus positively transforming their lives.

“Some students come from needy backgrounds and are bright. Such a gesture will provide them with the much needed support to encourage them to continue working hard to complete their studies,” said Prof. Kinyua.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor thanked the Mitsubishi Corporation for their support describing the initiative pivotal in uplifting the students to play critical roles in the society.

While highlighting the importance of supporting students’ studies, Manager, Mitsubishi Corporation (Nairobi), Mr. Antony Keru noted that as a corporation, Mitsubishi is committed to support the education of students who come from poor backgrounds but are academically gifted.

“We believe supporting education is an important step in ensuring we uplift the lives of the future leaders. Such an endeavor will make considerable impact among our youth and we hope we can continue touching more lives,” stated Mr. Keru.

Charity Roselyn, a second-year Bachelor of Commerce student and one of the scholarship recipients, expressed her gratitude for the scholarship, stating that it will allow her to completely focus on academics.

“I am really happy I was selected for this scholarship. I have been undergoing some financial challenges which were affecting my performance in class and with this scholarship, I will focus and work hard without any financial worries,” Roselyn observed.

Edwin Mageto, a second year Bachelor of Commerce student and a beneficiary of the programme, couldn’t hide his joy as he displayed his certificate stating that the scholarship would relieve his parents’ financial burden and provide him the peace of mind to study.

“My father recently retired as the primary bread winner in our family. This scholarship will allow my parents to focus on my other siblings. I can now focus on my studies and maybe in the future assist my family,” stated Mageto.

He thanked Mitsubishi Corporation for the support urging for more such opportunities to be availed to more needy students to impact their lives.
