Mozilla Supports JKUAT’s Computer Science Program

Mozilla has pledged to support Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in training to enhance Responsible Computer Science (RCC) capacity. Dr. Chao Mbogho, Mozilla’s Senior Fellow and Lead of the Responsible Computer Science Challenge Kenya, noted that the support aligns with Mozilla’s initiative to address the skills gap by educating students in ethical computing principles and innovation.

During a visit to the university on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, Dr. Mbogho revealed developments stemming from JKUAT’s successful acquisition of two Mozilla grants: Teaching Responsible Computing Using Robotics and Mainstreaming Responsible Computing (RC) in ICT Student Innovations.

Dr. Mbogho reported that plans are underway to build upon the successful partnership to further enhance the university’s capacity in RCC.

“In JKUAT, we are anticipating that the number of participants will increase through second and third iterations of the pilot proposal by April 2024. We are planning a seminar for participants to connect with fellow RCC faculty in India and USA,” said Dr. Mbogho.

While receiving Dr. Mbogho to the University on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Ngumi, JKUAT’s Director of Information and Communications Technology, Prof. Stephen Kimani expressed his gratitude to Mozilla for choosing to work with JKUAT.

Highlighting the significant strides made in advancing technological innovation and access to resources within the university community Prof. Kimani emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in fostering a culture of innovation and learning among students and faculty alike.

“Stepping into the world of responsible computing feels like venturing into uncharted territory and for this I am forever grateful to Mozilla Foundation and JKUAT formaking this possible,” said Rose Kimu, a JKUAT student and beneficiary of the Mozilla supported programmes.
