School of Natural Resources and Animal Sciences Elect Dr Kagira as Dean

Dr. John Kagira, a Senior Lecturer in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (COANRE), has been elected as the new Dean, (SONRAS), following unanimous endorsement by the faculty in the departments of Animal Sciences and Land Resource Planning and Management (LRPM).

The prolific researcher with over 150 peer-reviewed journal publications to his credit, has been the Chairperson of the Animal Science Department since 2019. He now succeeds Prof. Francis Njonge, whose term lapsed after four years of service (as the pioneer Dean of SONRAS).

Dr. Aggrey Wanyama, acting Registrar, Academic Affairs, made the official announcement declaring the deanship on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at a brief ceremony attended by a section of the School’s faculty, who included former Principal COANRE, Prof. David Mburu and Dr. Mathew Kigomo (Chairman, LRPM).

While congratulating Dr. Kagira on his new role, Dr. Wanyama noted that the School would indeed flourish under his leadership, given the glowing tributes and messages of goodwill from the experienced faculty.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Kagira, who was grateful to the School for their confidence in his leadership, pledged his commitment to a consultative working environment which he believes, is critical in achieving their goals.

Key among these goals is attracting more students through short courses at the School to enhance knowledge in agriculture. He also aims to ensure the undergraduate curricula is reviewed regularly to meet international standards and relevant to the changing global needs due to factors such as climate change.
