Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology’s Alumni and International Students Office (ALISO) hosted a sensitization meeting for its international student community, February 23, 2024. Over 50 students gathered to learn about Kenyan laws, university regulations, and cultural integration, aimed at facilitating smooth and enriching experience for foreign students.

Representatives from the Commission for University Education, Kenya National Qualifications Authority, and the Department of Immigration Services provided valuable insights and answered student questions.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, commended the students for selecting JKUAT as their preferred destination for higher education. She highlighted JKUAT’s foundation which is rooted in internationalization, forged through bilateral collaboration between the Governments of Kenya and Japan.

“At JKUAT, we are committed to providing international students with an environment conducive to academic excellence. Consequently, many of our international students have not only completed their studies successfully but have also assumed pivotal roles within government, the private sector, and various development agencies,” said Prof. Ngumi.

She further encouraged international students to actively leverage the available opportunities and networks to excel beyond academics.

“JKUAT offers you a platform to launch your careers and envision future possibilities. Be catalysts for change and drive positive societal transformations in your respective countries and beyond,” advised Prof. Ngumi.

In her address, Director of ALISO, Prof. Vivienne Matiru, emphasized the significance of such forums in fostering a sense of belonging for international students.

“I urge you to embrace and respect the diversity of culture, striving to live in harmony and unity. Stay in constant communication with us at ALISO for vital information and assistance. We are here to ensure you enjoy your stay at JKUAT,” Prof. Matiru urged the attendees.

JKUAT currently hosts over 500 international students, including those enrolled in the Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation (PAUSTI).

ALISO, aligned with the university’s vision of global excellence, aims to develop programs that strengthen relationships between alumni, international students, and JKUAT, thereby creating a mutually beneficial ecosystem.
