JKUAT Mathematics Don Officiates at 2024 AFCON

JKUAT’s Pure and Applied Mathematics don, Dr. Waweru Kamaku, made his second bow at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as he seized the spotlight to command the field in the electrifying group stage clash between Morocco and DRC Congo. The match, which ended in a one all draw, took place on Sunday, January 21, 2024 in the host Country Côte d’Ivoire.

Dr. Kamaku made his AFCON debut in 2022 when he wrote his name in the history books by becoming the first Kenyan center referee in the tournament. Additionally, he took on the role of Virtual Assistant Referee (VAR) for the Group B match between Egypt and Mozambique.

The Pure and Applied Mathematics don, who is also the JKUAT’s Director of Sports,  elevation to prominence is no luck but sheer hard work and love for the game. Before his rise to the pinnacle of match officiation, the FIFA accredited referee was in Niger, February 2-17, 2019, for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, his first major assignment since earning his badge in 2017.

While commenting on his AFCON appearance, Dr. Kamaku said, “I am truly honoured to be part of such a prestigious tournament like AFCON for the second time. Being a FIFA referee is a testament to my dedication and passion for the beautiful game”.

He expressed his gratitude to his family, JKUAT and his mentors and friends who he referred to as his support system.

Dr. Kamaku’s prominence in the international sports arena not only illuminates his individual achievements but also casts a spotlight on JKUAT as a sports powerhouse. Under his ongoing tenure, the university has amassed numerous trophies, further solidifying its reputation as a formidable force in sports.
